By Sierra LaDuke Last week SEED SPOT teamed up with Social Venture Partners of Arizona (SVPAZ) for one epic boot camp. All participants were finalists in SVP’s fast pitch program. SVPAZ hopes their ventures utilize our alumni network and mentors as they continue to grow. There’s one thing in particular that makes this batch of humans super cool. They are our first cohort that consists of all non-profit ventures! Among the participants was Joyce Lefco, the board president of Detour Company Theatre, a theater for adults with special needs. When asked what the most challenging part of keeping a nonprofit successful is, Joyce said, “There’s always a need to serve more people. We don’t want to turn anyone away, and we don’t.” It takes space, people, and funding to keep any business successful. SVPAZ and SEED SPOT both work to help ventures find these resources. Joyce was not alone in her efforts to help people with intellectual disabilities, for One Step Beyond, Autisim Career and College Academy of Arizona, and Beneficial Beans were all present at the boot camp. “The world seems to be changing and becoming more accepting. We want opportunity, and it’s happening,” Joyce said.
